my new ps3 is killing me

08.05.07 | Comment?

I got a new PS3 yesterday as an early birthday present from the girlfriend. I couldn’t be more excited, but after updating the systems firmware a very high pitched noise started to emit from the console…

the sound is much like when you pitch up a radio frequency or something of that sort in your ear. like a beaming ring straight to your ear then its just gone.

well unfortunately this does not disappear after a few seconds.

searching the net is no help. PS3 boys are the fucking worse, and thats the only people who troll around on PS3 forms. if you say anything negative about PS3 your a noob piece of shit that doesn’t know what he’s talking about and that it must be just your equipment, etc etc. no constructive feedback at all.

funny how I read through maybe a hundred different threads and seen dozens of people with the same issue but yet every time anything negative is brought up against the console they person gets flamed. ugh…

anyway it may or may not be a result of the firmware upgrade. a theory was in the latest firmware there was something to make sure the fan keeps the system at a certain temp- obviously making the fan spin faster. OR it is heat sensitive and starts to spin faster as the system heats up. I think the later is the case after playing for about an hour this morning.

I boot up the console and no whinny noise. sounds great (no sound). I look around on the online store, then am checking out the different menus in the console, blah blah blah. finally decide to play Super Stardust HD (my new favorite game). things are going good for about 5-10 minutes then DUN DUN DUN the sound is back. yes thats right after the system had some time to heat up it was back. and rightfully so, this is actually a really graphic intense game- there is a shit load of stuff being rendered without any hiccups.

so its definitely the fan. I’m almost positive that if I were to open up the case and put a drop of lube on the bearings that we’d never hear that sound again.. but I can’t risk that lol. might end up taking it back to the store and trying a different one with a different set of serial numbers. seems to be just the fans they used in this batch seeing as the other people who are having the same issue are also part of this same batch.

guess I’ll be making a trip back to bestbuy sometime next week :(
